A former President of ECOWAS Commission, Kadr\u00e9 Ou\u00e9draogo and a Gambian parliamentarian, Fatoumatta Njai, have called on African nations and political actors to safeguard democratic governance by practising internal party democracy and ensuring transparent, credible and inclusive electoral system.<\/p>\n

They both spoke as panelists at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) Democracy Dialogue held on Tuesday in Bauchi.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The News Agency of Nigeria NAN reports that the democracy dialogue had as its theme: \u201cBeyond Elections: Can Political Parties and the Judiciary Save African Democracy?\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
According to Ou\u00e9draogo, representative democracy relies entirely on the integrity of elections to designate legitimate leaders.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cTherefore, it is essential that the electoral system be transparent, credible and inclusive.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cPolitical parties and election management bodies must work hard for this, because there can be no sustainable democracy without transparent and credible elections,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Ou\u00e9draogo, who urged political actors to prioritise national peace and stability above personal or partisan gains, also advised aggrieved parties to present concrete proof when challenging poll outcomes rather than relying on unfounded allegations.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cParties must support their grievances with tangible and compelling evidence so that the appeals can be judged objectively, while respecting the legal arena adopted for correcting wrongs.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is for the judiciary to arbitrate between the parties and validate the results,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
On her part, Njai warned that political parties in Africa often failed to consolidate long-term democratic values because they usually mobilised close to elections.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
She urged political parties in Africa to emulate consolidated structures like those witnessed during Senegal\u2019s 2024 elections.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cPolitical parties end up running around months or a year before elections trying to get membership.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cHow then would they consolidate values? Senegal proved that with a consolidated political party structure, victory can be achieved even under severe adversity,\u201d Njai said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Sharing her personal experience of standing as an independent candidate after challenging her party\u2019s decision to align with the former ruling establishment in The Gambia, Njai emphasised that true democratic resilience begins from within political organisations.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cI took my matter to court, but the decision was dragged until after the elections took place.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cHad I waited, I wouldn\u2019t have contested. I opted to run independently and justice prevailed because the electorate decided.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
