Tanimu Turaki, National Chairman of the Interim National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged voters to choose candidates deliberately in 2027.<\/p>\n

Ini Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary of the faction working committee, quoted Turaki in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Turaki spoke at a colloquium organised to mark Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State\u2019s 68th birthday anniversary.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
He said the quality of candidates elected would determine the calibre of leaders Nigeria would have in the next democratic cycle.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is often said that a country has the leaders it deserves. That is true because they don\u2019t become leaders except we choose them.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cSome actively vote for bad leaders, while others refuse to vote, thereby still allowing bad leadership to emerge.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must not vote in exchange for spaghetti, rice, money or any other inducements.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must vote according to the capacity of the candidates to offer quality representation and contribute to national development,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Turaki said Nigeria had previously produced leaders, particularly legislators, who provided effective and responsible representation for their constituents.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cA weak legislature is not good for our country, as there will be no effective checks and balances,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
He commended the organisers for providing an opportunity for participants to exchange ideas, review the past and plan for the future.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Turaki also reiterated the need for greater youth participation in politics and governance.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cYoung people must be consciously engaged in the process of politics and governance, as integral parts of the process, and not just as decoration or a statistic.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must stop saying that youths are the leaders of tomorrow. When will that tomorrow come?<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cYoung people are the greatest stakeholders of the future, and that future cannot be discussed or planned in their absence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Turaki commended Mohammed for making youth inclusion a priority of his administration, saying it was evident in his choice of preferred successor.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
