Tanimu Turaki, National Chairman of the Interim National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on the electorate to be intentional in the candidates they will be voting for during the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n

Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary of the factional working committee, in a statement in Abuja on Monday quoted Turaki as making the call in his speech at a colloquium held to mark Gov. Bala Mohammed 68th birthday anniversary.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
Turaki said that the quality of candidates who emerge successful in the elections would determine the calibre of leaders that Nigeria would have in the next democratic cycle.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
\u201cit is often said that a country has the leaders it deserves. That is true because they don\u2019t become leaders except, we choose them or acquiesce to their emergence.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cSome actively vote for bad leaders while others refuse to vote at all, thereby still allowing the emergence of bad leadership.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must not vote in exchange for spaghetti, rice, money or any other inducements.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must vote according to the capacity of the candidates to offer quality representation and contribute to national development,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Turaki said that in the past Nigeria had leaders, especially legislators who offered effective and responsible representation of their people.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cA weak legislature is not good for our country, as there will be no effective checks and balance,\u201d he said<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
He commend the organisers of this event for providing an opportunity for the meeting of minds to x-ray the past and plan the future.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Turaki also reiterated the need for youth participation in politics and governance.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cYoung people must be consciously engaged in the process of politics and governance, as integral parts of the process, and not just as a decoration, or a statistic to look good.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must stop to say that youths are the leaders of tomorrow, when will that tomorrow come?<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cYoung people are the greatest stakeholders of the future, and that future cannot be discussed or planned in their absence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Turaki commended Mohammed for making youth inclusion a priority of his administration, which according to him is even obvious in the choice of his preferred successor.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
