Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir and Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir have condemned a social media post by U.S. President, showing Iceland and several neighbouring countries covered by the U.S. flag.<\/p>\n

Frostadottir said at a press conference Tuesday that the message conveyed by the image was \u201cabsurd\u201d and described it as an insult to Icelanders, Canadians and Greenlanders.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is nothing funny or normal about making fun of the sovereignty of states. The post should be taken seriously,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Gunnarsdottir also said Iceland had sent a clear message to the United States that the post was \u201ccompletely unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
She said Iceland is a sovereign and independent state responsible for its own destiny, adding that no other country could determine how Iceland handles its independence or sovereignty.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cIf this is supposed to be a joke, then it is a bad joke,\u201d Gunnarsdottir said.<\/p>\n

Gunnarsdottir summoned U.S. Ambassador to Iceland Billy Long for a meeting on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump published the image on his social media platform Truth Social.<\/p>\n

She said Iceland\u2019s position had been explicitly conveyed to the ambassador.<\/p>\n
